J&J Vaccines Recommended Making A Comeback By CDC

Keeping your finances in order is important, but keeping you and your family healthy is even more so. We are all going through tough times with the pandemic continuously booming in numbers. Our only hope seems to be the vaccines approaching to lower our chances of getting the disease. With the number of issues circulating regarding the vaccines, the little faith Americans have seems to be getting squished.

Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen9 (J&J) COVID-19 Vaccine is one such vaccine which was stopped for a while due to its increasing side effects. Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Food and Drug Administration (FDA), both have recommended its usage.

J&J was asked to make a comeback by the CDC recently as its benefits outweigh the risk. This statement made by the CDC has put people on edge as the vaccine comes with a set of warnings.

The CDC panel’s vote on the usage of the J&J vaccine was- ten in support, one abstained, and four in opposition. This CDC’s decision has led to the conclusion to resume the vaccine usage for all ages above eighteen.

Issues Faced With The J&J Vaccine

The CDC put off J&J vaccines for a while to check if the vaccine caused unusual issues like blood clotting. After getting the first dose, six cases of blood clots broke out of the one million vaccinated patients. This issue made J&J and FDA halt the vaccine for a while on April 13th.

Between eighteen to forty years, six women with blood clotting symptoms had developed cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST). Their blood platelet counts were discovered to be very low after getting the shots for two weeks.

Now they have recommended the usage of the Vaccine with 65% effectiveness containing special warnings. They said that they are not restricting its use but adding an alert for the blood clots. It is also prohibited for women above the age of fifty.

Dr. Joanne Waldstreicher, J&J’s chief medical officer, talked about this issue, saying there were also fewer cases of COVID reported and the death rate had decreased.

The CDC reviewed and monitored evidence from a total of fifteen people who reported blood clots as a side effect. Out of these, three people died, and seven were hospitalized. These included thirteen women under fifty. Moreover, twelve of the patients suffered rare blood clots.

The CDC argued that delaying the process of providing the vaccine might cause more harm. This would also make the people intending to get their first dose within 14 days get more complicated. The J&J vaccine has helped many people in the tribal areas as it came cheap.

The U.S. health officials stated that the usage of vaccines could also be beneficial for people who would not be able to come back for second doses.

The blood clot occurrence was found to be the same in people who took the AstraZeneca Covid Vaccine. The blood clot that develops due to the brain’s venous sinus is a rare blood clot that stops the blood from coming out of the brain. This leads to Hemorrhage and other brain diseases.

Dr. Tom Shimabukuro, a CDC official, said that they also received reports from other vaccine producing companies like Pfizer-BioNTech mRNA vaccine. Three reports were found out on patients who took the Moderna vaccine to have CVST.

J&J has already resumed the launch of the vaccines in Europe with a warning on the label. The European Medicines Agency checked all evidence on J&J before they started to issue it. A CDC meeting member said that there are many supporting benefits of the vaccine more than its side effect.

Wrapping Up

According to the recent investigation on J&J’s single-dose vaccine, it is established that the vaccine protects from COVID-19. This vaccine is taken only once, making it easier for many people who can’t afford two doses.

FDA has clarified that J&J’s vaccine is 66% effective in people diagnosed with moderate to severe COVID-19. It is also considered safe and 85% adequate in extreme cases. The vaccine provided people with two weeks of protection after its dosage. The common side effects include pain in the site of injection, fever, headache, and fatigue.

Although the decision seems to have been difficult, the J&J vaccine brings the U.S. citizens hope in their fight against Covid.
